On Wednesday the 11th of June, Jonas will present his Masters Thesis "Simulator for Operative Extraction of Wisdom Teeth". More information on the open event can be found on KTH webpage.

Abstract

Simulator for Operative Extraction of Wisdom Teeth

Dental education in Sweden includes theory concerning oral surgery, but unfortunately no practice due to limited resources. The purpose of this Master?s project was to develop, by an applied user centered design approach, a simulator that will help students gain skills regarding surgical extraction of wisdom teeth before practicing on live patients.

Contextually valid requirements were formulated based on results from interviews with surgeons and observations of surgeons at work. The core component of the simulator prototype was the ability to feel the shape of jaw and vibrations while drilling. This is provided by utilizing haptic technology, in particular a Phantom 3-DOF haptic device was used. Different algorithms for force evaluation for drill-bone interaction were studied and a volume-based algorithm was implemented. The Computed tomography derived 3d-image used for haptic feedback was also graphically volume rendered in real time together with a triangle mesh of a head model.

The results of the cooperative evaluation of the prototype with surgeons showed that training on virtual jaw bone drilling was possible, although features that have to be re-designed were also found. The tacit knowledge, using vision, hearing and touch that surgeons rely on was also reviled.
